continues. good morning, to you. welcome to a brand new day friday, january 11th i'm dave clark. >> good morning, i'm pam cook. thank you for waking up with us again this morning. it is friday, it is cold. let's check in with steve. >> it is cold, breezy you two. a lot of 30s and 40s. if it wasn't for that breeze it would be colder. couple showers possible. i think even inland could be a little bit more in the way of cloud buildups today. upper 40s and low 50s. here is sal. traffic on highway 4 bay point you can see it moving along pretty well. san francisco northbound 101 traffic also looks good approaching the 80 split. let's go back to the desk. we are following breaking news right now from the east bay. ktvu channel 2 reporter tara moriarty is in oakland where there is a raid going on.

tara what can you tell us? >> reporter: if you take a look over here to my right to the right you can see this is the house that was actually raided just moments ago. and some of the people who live in that home were allowed back inside. officers have been questioning them but they're not under arrest. others were arrested. we're in the max well park neighborhood off interstate 5580. just after 5:00 this morning officers moved in. this is about one of half a dozen raids taking place this morning. we are told this operation the riskiest. these are alleged gang members. the search is still going on at this time. when we first arrived we did spot the police helicopter. neighbors did report hearing a loud boom. there was a tactical unit at the top of the hill and an ambulance in case anything went

wrong. but they have left so it looks like everything went off without a hitch. we'll of course keep you posted. live from oakland i'm tara moriarty. our time is 6:02. sad story. a marin city family is mourning the death of a family member. a teenager who was shot and killed just after midnight. he's identified as lavonio williams. he was shot two or three times. paramedics did perform cpr but they couldn't save him. investigators are questioning witnesses but so far no arrests have been made. now coming up in our next half hour, we'll be talking to his family and bring you more details about meantime poli say a home on park d. police found the body of a 48-year-old inside the home early yesterday evening. two hours later a 27-year-old

man showed up at the fremont police station with a suspected murder weapon turning himself in. both the victim and the suspect lived at that home but police have not told us the nature of their relationship or a possible motive. in just a couple of how weres from right now the new boeing dream liner jet will be taking off from san jose airport for the very first time. in 30 minutes from now the federal aviation administration will hold a news conference tied to the safety concerns about that jet. ktvu janine de la vega joining us live. she is at ma theta san jose airport right now. what can you tell us? >> reporter: well all over san jose you can see signs touting the inaugural flight to tokyo. it takes off here from at 11:45. it's being operated by ana. what is being used is the 787 boeing dream liner.

the faa will be holding a news conference to launch a major review of the boeing 787 boeing dream liner. this week there were numerous problems reported with the aircraft. one flight had to be canceled because of brake lines with the plane. on monday a dream liner operated by japan airlines had an electrical fire broke out in its battery. this has spark concerns and put a damper on the air sport here. >> i think the more convenient international flights we have here locally is great. i love that. i don't like to have to drive to sfo. so that is good for me. >> reporter: nan will be flying to tokyo five days a week. it's the first direct flight from san jose to asia in six years. it's also the first airport in the bay area to have this dream

liner that has been touted as technologically advanced and fuel efficient. coming up later in the morning the media is supposed to be giving a tour of the aircraft. there will be several transportation officials as well as people from ana. we plan on asking them about the latest development. reporting live from san jose janine de la vega. vice president joe biden meets today at the white house with representatives of the video game industry about ways to reduce gun violence. the vice president says he will present recommendations from his meetings this week to the president on tuesday. yesterday the vice president met with representatives from the entertainment industry and gun owners groups. the president of the national rifle association says he left that meeting disappointed. >> they knew going into this meeting what the president's position on the so-called assault weapon ban is. it's the same he's taken for years. these are not new positions. the vice president said we do this with an open mind.

at the meeting he said no we made up our mind on that. >> nra says it will not allow quote law-abiding gun owners be blamed for the acts of criminals and madmen. >> i don't need an assault weapon to protect my home. >> gun owners alistening with supporters of gun -- along with supporters of gun control packed a meeting. meeting. three finalists were interviewed. now the city manager says she wants more time to consider them and look at even more candidates. the current police chief chris moore plans to retire a week from today. 6:07 is the time right now. back over to sal who's been kind of busy for afraid. how does it look? >> it's okay. we are getting more people on the roads now pam and dave. and you'll see some of the traffic pictures more people showing up at the bay bridge.

there is a lot of cold weather spilling in here. cold continues to funnel in and another system is driving in here. look at the lows. 26 now in fairfield. yet novato says 43 with a north wind at 18 miles an hour. 46sfo. they've had northwest at 14. livermore is now 32. concord is 32. there is cold air in place. it's just being held up. look at this system taking a little bit more of a path. a little bit more inland. there is very dry air over inland areas. there is a lot more moisture off the coast. areas closer to the coast have a better opportunity for showers. but i would think that today may be a little more build up over the hills. and it's breezy and cold in the mornings. upper 40s and low 50s. another cold morning on saturday. one more system drops down saturday afternoon and evening cold and breezy after another -- upper 40s and low 50s. it doesn't matter north, south

bay. inland. everyone will be within a very fine temperature range. it's 49-52. clouds possible showers. next week looking warmer. rs to give you an idea how cold it is in the south bay take a look at at this video from mount hamilton. it's covered with a dusting of snow and trees look at that. it almost looks like tahoe. we wanted to get an up close look at all that. bay area children will win if the 49ers knock off the packers. mayor ed lee has a friendly wager with his green bay counterpart james schmidt. that means if the hotters win local kids -- 49ers wins the local kids will be able to tour the new museum when it opens.

outcome could determine how many american troops come home this year. kyla. >> reporter: dave more than 60,000 u.s. troops are in afghanistan right now. president obama has not determined how many will leave the middle east this year. the u.s. war on terror in afghanistan officially ends next year. u.s. and nato forces are set to leave by the year of 2014. this year afghan forces are supposed to take the lead in security and that means thousands of u.s. traps could return home. but president obama is open to keeping anywhere from 3,000 to 15,000 u.s. troops in afghanistan. after the end of the war next year. the u.s. leaders want to make sure afghan officials can run their government and security without america's help. plus the pentagon wants karzai's word that the afghan security forces will keep the taliban from setting up shop as soon as the u.s. pulls out its troops.

job. production will be shifted to texas, ohio, and north carolina. in the north bay an overflow crowd was at the third and final community forum on gun violence. bay area congressman mike thompson hosted the meeting. thompson chairs the congressional gun violence province task force. last night people packed into the hallway and overflow room waiting to speak. among the speakers the widow of a fort bragg councilman that was shot and killed by a mentally gunman last year. >> you have a responsibility to keep the guns out of the hands of mentally ill and truck users. >> i see no purpose of owning assault weapons. at the same time i am not in favor of gun control. >> congressman thompson previously held meetings in vallejo and napa.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. take a look at this. amazing video of a dust storm. that is off the western coast of australia. a giant red cloud of dust formed while passing over the town ofness low. meteorologists say dry conditions and strong winds created the perfect conditions for that dust storm. also this morning apple ceo tim cook says he expects china to replace the u.s. as his company's biggest market. cook is in china meeting with regulators. he made his comments to reporters during a break in meetings. but he would not respond to reports that apple is working on a lower cost iphone for developing markets such as china. san francisco famed gold dust lounge will celebrate its grand reopening this afternoon. the new location is on

morning swat teams moved into the home on the 3100 block of month sell low avenue. this is one of a half a dozen raids that are taking place this morning. this particular operation was dangerous because officers are dealing with alleged gang members. they are looking for drugs, guns, that sort of thing. when we arrived the police helicopter was overhead. we saw tactical units and ambulances on stand by. neighbors reported to us they heard a loud boom. we're not sure if that was a door being kicked in or flash grenades were deplayed. around 5:45 most of the units were pulled out. oakland police are remaining tight lipped about who exactly these people are. some of the folks inside were told -- they are inside right now. they are not under arrest. others were taken away. police will not comment about this case. they simply don't know the outcome of the other raids taking place this morning. live from oakland i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news.

marin county forensic teams are still looking for evidence at the scene of a deadly shooting. the teenage victim just celebrated his birthday this week. the grief stricken family has been opening up to our own claudine wong who is out there this morning. claudine. >> reporter: yes. certainly have a very difficult time out here. the family lives in these apartment complexes. let me show you what is happening night right now. the coroner within the last hour has taken away the body of 17-year-old lavon williams. you can see they are out there still and they will be out there for awhile. we talked to the family about him. i want to show you the picture of the 17-year-old. the family says that you know he's had a little bit of a rough go of it but has been out of juvenile hall within the last nine months and has come here to spend time with his family. he had been here for just about a week and just celebrated his

birthday now days ago. they do have a theory about why he was shot. >> i saw him five minutes before it happened. he came to check up on me to see if i was okay. because there was stuff going on by my house. this guy was acting crazy. and then i guess -- i don't know what he was doing. i don't know what he was doing. >> reporter: what did you say to your brother? >> my brother was freaked out by that and was like we have to be careful. >> someone thought he took this stash of dope. and took his life. and he did not even take it. we were all in the house. he did not take the people's drugs. so whoever it is that took somebody's chow my brother didn't take your dope. so you killed a person for absolutely no reason at all.

a baby. a child. >> reporter: now we've also talked with police this morning. this investigation is still ongoing and hoping for anyone to come forward to help them piece together what happened. they say there were several 911 calls reporting shots fired about 12:15 thousands morning. they tell us he was shot two to three times and they are conducting interviews right now. back out here live they do expect to be out here for most of the morning. it could stretch into the afternoon as they try to get the pieces and evidence together in marin city's first homicide of the year. live in marin city claudine wong. happening right now as we've been reporting in a few hours the new boeing dream liner jet will take off from san jose airport launching ground breaking service but there are growing safety concerns about that jet. right now we're looking at the faa holding a news conference. let's listen in for a moment. >> to conduct a review of all

of the critical systems of the 787 including -- a team of experts will jointly evalwait all aspects -- evaluate all aspects of the airplane. we want to make sure the approved quality control procedures are in place and that all of the necessary oversight is done. we want to see the entire picture and we do not want to simply focus on individual events. we want to determine the root causes of these recent events so they won't happen again. we are going to put an emphasize on the electrical systems of the airplane. what this includes is components such as batteries and power distribution panels. we'll also look at how the electrical and mechanical systems of the airplane interact with one another. >> we are listening into the faa news conference going on right now in washington, d.c.. he is talking about the dream

liner boeing 787 the jet that has had problems and he specifically mentioned they are looking into electrical problems, battery problems. we talked earlier about one jet. there was some fuel leaking after it landed. again they are supposed to take off from san jose. we have watching the story throughout the morning and listening to the press conference. coming up at 6:45, ktvu channel 2 reporter janine de la vega will have more on this story coming up from san jose. our time is 6:36. the number of flu cases keeps going up. between september and december more than 22,000 flu cases were reported. the cdc says this could be the worst flu season in a decade. on top of that, there is a shortage of flu vaccines. >> i have had asthma in the past and so i was high risk so i always got the flu shot. >> now if you do get a flu shot doctors say it takes two weeks to become effective. coming up we'll get an update

for the c -- from the cdc. right now we want to get an update on traffic. >> traffic is continuing to look pretty good. it's getting more crowded. we're looking a the the toll plaza here. it's crowded. it's not as bad as it has been. usually it's backed up way beyond what with can see here. so not a brad day. and usually if this starts this way by the time 8:00 rolls around it's completely empty. unless there is a crash. moving along and taking a look at san francisco northbound 101 traffic looks good coming in from san francisco all the way up to the downtown area and 80 split. and if you're driving in the pleasanton area livermore, dublin 2500 customers without power in that area. some signal lights may be out. treat those as a four-way stop. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. a very good morning. cold morning.

fuel efficient. coming up later on, we are supposed to get a tour of this boeing 787 we plan on talking to transportation officials including the former head of the department of transportation norman manetta himself. if you are traveling from san francisco this weekend, you may run into delays. sfo is shutting down one of the main runways for safety upgrades. the closures start at 10:00 tonight. they will last through 8:00 a.m. monday morning. that could mean delays up to 45 minutes for departing flights. this is the first of three weekends for this closure. time now 6:48. now details about yesterday's shooting at a central california high school that left a student fighting for his life. it happened in taft. now that is an area south of bakersfield. authorities say the 16-year-old took the gun from his brother and then targeted students that had been bullying him for more than a year. surveillance video shows the boy trying to hide the gun as
